2026 Audi Q5 vs 2026 BMW X3: Comfort Wins the Day

The 2026 Audi Q5 and 2026 BMW X3 are both modern luxury SUVs, but they approach daily driving differently. The BMW leans toward a firm and sporty personality, while the Audi places more emphasis on comfort, flexible seating and easy to use technology. For Ottawa commutes, winter roads and weekends around Gatineau Park, the Q5 feels like the more balanced companion.

A Small Advantage You Can Feel

The Audi Q5 uses a turbocharged 2.0 litre four cylinder engine producing 268 horsepower and 295 lb ft of torque. The BMW X3 30 xDrive also uses a turbocharged 2.0 litre engine, but it produces 255 horsepower. Audi lists a 0 to 100 km/h time of 6.2 seconds, while the BMW requires 6.3 seconds.


The difference is not dramatic, but the Q5 delivers slightly stronger output for joining Highway 417 or passing slower traffic. Standard quattro all wheel drive also provides predictable traction when roads become wet, snowy or covered in slush.

Three Screens Without the Clutter

The Q5 places an 11.9 inch virtual cockpit beside a standard 14.5 inch MMI touchscreen. An available 10.9 inch passenger display allows the front passenger to access supported apps without taking over the central screen. The BMW offers a polished Curved Display, but it does not provide a separate passenger screen.

Audi also offers a head up display, a forward facing 4K camera and a 16 speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system. These are optional features, but they allow buyers to create a cabin that feels genuinely advanced rather than simply screen heavy.

Ottawa Roads Are Rarely Perfect

Available adaptive air suspension gives the Q5 another meaningful advantage. It continuously responds to changing conditions and can adjust the vehicle’s ride height. This can help the Audi remain comfortable over broken pavement while adding confidence on changing road surfaces. The X3 30 xDrive offers sporty suspension options, but not adaptive air suspension. Reviewers have also noted that the BMW M Sport package can reduce ride smoothness.

The Back Seat Has a Better Plan

The Q5 has a practical advantage that passengers may appreciate more than another performance number. Its rear seatbacks can recline, and the rear bench can slide to create more passenger room or additional cargo space. The X3 has a fixed rear seatback, making its cabin less adaptable when passengers and luggage need to share the space. Independent testing also found that the Q5 provides more rear legroom.


The BMW officially lists more maximum cargo volume, but testers were able to carry a similar amount of luggage in both SUVs. The Audi’s movable rear bench gives owners greater control over how that space is used.

Assistance That Stays in the Background

Available adaptive cruise assist can manage the distance from traffic ahead while helping keep the Q5 centred in its lane. The available head up display places important information closer to the driver’s natural sightline. The BMW also offers advanced assistance packages, but several of its most appealing systems require added packages.
